Your best bet for reaching Koh Phangan is to fly into one of the following airports. Once you’ve arrived at your chosen airport, the simplest and most affordable way to complete your journey is by ferry. :

Koh Samui Airport (USM): The closest option, just a 30-minute ferry ride away. Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways offer direct flights from Bangkok and other major cities. After landing, take a quick taxi ride to either Bangrak Pier or Maenam Pier, and catch a ferry to Koh Phangan.

Surat Thani Airport (URT): A budget-friendly choice with airlines like AirAsia and Nok Air offering economical flights from Bangkok. From Surat Thani, it’s about a 1.5-hour bus or taxi ride to Donsak Pier, followed by a scenic 2.5-hour ferry ride to Koh Phangan.

HOW TO GET AROUND KOH PHANGAN

Koh Phangan is a fairly large island, and when it comes to getting around, tuk-tuks can be on the pricier side. There’s a flat fee per person regardless of how short your trip is, and they usually only operate when they’re full. For the best way to explore the island, renting a scooter is highly recommended. You can find scooter rentals all over Koh Phangan, with prices typically ranging from 150 to 250 THB per day, depending on the season. Renting a scooter gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover all the hidden gems the island has to offer.

BEST TIME TO VISIT KOH PHANGAN

Koh Phangan enjoys consistently warm temperatures throughout the year, rarely falling below 25°C. The primary variation you’ll encounter is in rainfall, which starts to increase in May and peaks between September and November.

January to March: This period offers the best weather, with plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. However, this also brings larger crowds, which can drive up prices for transport and accommodation.

April to June: During these months, the weather remains generally good, with slightly higher chances of rain. This period tends to be less crowded and more affordable compared to the peak season.

BEST ACCOMMODATIONS IN KOH PHANGAN

North/ West Koh phangan- – If you’re planning a trip to Koh Phangan, I highly recommend setting up base in the north. The Kuan Yin Chinese Temple, situated on the road from Thong Sala to Chaloklum, is a real highlight of Koh Phangan. It might be the most striking temple on the island, with its colourful, artistic design that sets it apart from other Buddhist temples. The temple features several levels, each with Chinese-style orange roofs and bright turquoise details.

Inside, you’ll find golden Buddha statues, intricately carved dragon sculptures, and temple bells that gently ring in the wind. The views from the temple are just as impressive, offering a sweeping look over tropical forests and the bay of Chaloklum.

2-PHO DANG WATERFALL
Pho Dang Waterfall is a hidden gem on Koh Phangan, perfect for a nature escape. Nestled in the island’s lush interior, this peaceful waterfall flows over rocky terrain into a clear, inviting pool. For a more serene experience, visit in the morning when it’s less crowded and the light is beautiful.

Waterfalls on Koh Phangan are highly seasonal, and during certain times of the year, they may have little to no water at all. To catch them at their most impressive, plan your visit during the monsoon season from July to September. Just keep in mind that the rainy weather can make the trails slippery and challenging, as they are not always well-maintained.

There is a 100 THB entrance fee to the park.

3-WAT MADUEA WAN TEMPLE

A must-see on Koh Phangan is the hilltop temple of Wat Maduea Wan. This picturesque red and gold temple sits atop a steep staircase, flanked by impressive 5-headed serpent statues. While the temple itself is small and might not be as visually striking as the statues, the real magic lies in the surrounding environment.

Take your time to explore the area around the temple. You might spot monks going about their day or simply enjoy the peaceful views of the lush jungle and durian trees. Visiting in the morning offers the best experience, as it’s the quietest time of day.
