Lombok is often overshadowed by Bali, yet it stands as one of the most captivating destinations to explore! With its expansive landscapes, dense jungles, exhilarating treks, quaint local villages, cascading waterfalls, and pristine beaches, this island offers a wealth of experiences and has quickly become one of my favourite places. Having spent two months here, I am thrilled to share some of my favourite activities and hidden gems on the island!
Getting around Lombok couldn’t be simpler. Generally, there are three options:
Scooter: We always opt to rent scooters, typically starting at around 50,000 IDR per day, and explore independently. Scooters can usually be rented from your accommodation, or they will guide you to where you can secure one. If you are staying longer, it will be cheaper, and you should negotiate!
Driver: Another option is to hire a driver, which is quite popular for day trips around Lombok, starting at around 500,000 IDR. Once again, inquire at your accommodation for this service, or seek out a local travel agent in the area.
Tour: Some of our most memorable experiences in Lombok have been on private tours. For those with limited time or a preference for organised activities, there are fantastic tours available. From Island hopping, to waterfall treks, there’s an abundance of options to keep you engaged on this vibrant island!
The dry season lasts from May to October, drawing the most tourists to Lombok. The wet season, from October to March, is my favourite time to visit! In the north, mornings are sunny while heavy rain falls in the afternoons. The south experiences less rainfall and mostly sunny days. Another advantage is fewer crowds, cheaper accommodations, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
If you’re a digital nomad or travelling through, you’re probably wondering about the WiFi. Lombok is known for temperamental Wifi, which can be an issue if you are working.
The two best providers are Telkomsel and XL, and you can organise this in Kuta.
The coverage with Telkomsel is generally better throughout the island and the cheaper option for packages. In saying that, I switched to XL as I found that the upload speed was better and more secure.
When considering where to stay in Lombok, it depends on your preferences, budget, and the experiences you seek. Kuta or Selong Balanak are good places to base yourself:
KUTA :
The tourist capital of Lombok, and conveniently the closest stop to the airport. Not to be confused with Kuta in Bali, Kuta Lombok is a laid-back coastal village known for its hipster cafes/ restaurants, and surfing spots. Accommodations here range from budget-friendly hostels to boutique guest- houses and villas.
SELONG BALANAK :
We stayed in Selong Belanak, which was ideal for us. It’s the perfect base to explore the south coast and all its attractions. The area features some of the most stunning beaches and serves as a central hub for exploring the rest of the island. It’s just a short 25-minute scooter ride from Kuta.
There is also Selong Belanak Beach, which is perfect for both experienced surfers and beginners. With its pristine sands and ideal waves, it’s a great spot to catch some waves or take surf lessons.
Nestled between Kuta and Tanjung Aan, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Lombok. Origin offers a serene getaway amidst lush nature in Lombok. With easy access to surfing, stunning sunsets, and lively nightlife. It is owned by the same people who run Amber. Personally, I prefer Amber, but if you want to be closer to Kuta, this is a great option!
What truly sets this place apart is not just its prime location, but also the lovely staff!
Segara is a stunning hotel nestled in Selong Belanak, perfect for those seeking a serene escape. The hotel features a beautiful pool area, a private secluded beach, and a charming restaurant ideal for al fresco dining. You can choose from gorgeous bungalows, some offering sea views. Segara is an excellent option if you want to avoid the crowds of Kuta while staying close to some of the best beaches in Lombok.
Kalma Bamboo Eco Lodge, located in Kuta, is renowned for its eco-friendly approach to hospitality. Surrounded by lush greenery, the lodge offers stunning bamboo bungalows that blend seamlessly with nature. You can enjoy a refreshing pool overlooking the lush jungle, providing a perfect spot for breathtaking sunsets. This place is an absolute dream for nature lovers and eco-conscious travellers!
El Bazar Restaurant and Bar in Kuta Lombok quickly became one of our favorite spots. This stunning place offers delicious Middle Eastern-inspired dishes with a focus on wine and shared meals. The cosy atmosphere blends Mediterranean and Moroccan styles. Enjoy dining on the alfresco terrace, in a beautiful lounge, or by the open kitchen. The cobalt blue courtyard recalls the charm of a Marrakech Riad, and the floor-to-ceiling wine cellar adds a special touch. Note that El Bazar is open only in the evenings, so plan your visit accordingly!
If you’re craving healthy food bursting with vibrant flavors, Terra is your go-to spot. They serve a colorful array of raw, vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based dishes. The portions are generous, and the food is absolutely scrumptious. Plus, you can savor your meal on their beautiful and refreshing rooftop terrace.
Who doesn’t adore Mexican food? The Mexican in Town, run by a talented Mexican chef, serves up the real deal. Indulge in all the classics: irresistible Baja fish tacos, generously stuffed burritos, the freshest tuna tostada (which quickly became my favorite), and zesty margaritas to complete your dining experience.
In Lombok, you’ll find two Mexican restaurants: The Mexican in Town and Cantina Mexicana. Despite the hype surrounding Cantina Mexicana, The Mexican in Town was by far my favourite!
If you’re craving homemade dumplings, this is the place to be. With a vibrant atmosphere created by its music, decor, and delectable food, this spot has a unique vibe. Don’t miss the Passion Fruit Martini—one of the best cocktails I’ve had since arriving. Plus, they offer a fantastic special every Wednesday: all dumplings for just 30,000! (€1,70)
This is the ultimate brunch spot! Experience long, lazy, and laid-back hangs all day in a setting with rustic and industrial decor that attracts a stylish crowd. Enjoy seriously delicious salads, sandwiches, smoothie bowls, and fresh juices—all homemade and bursting with flavour.
Every Sunday, they offer an all-you-can-eat buffet from 11:00 to 15:00, featuring everything from their menu. Expect BBQ meats, dips, salads, fruits, and Greek delicacies. The presentation is beautiful, and the food is delicious, complemented by fresh, free-flowing sangria. And the best part? It’s only 150,000 IDR per person.
If you’re willing to splurge, Milky Way is a must-visit. Perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, this beautiful restaurant stands out with one of the largest bamboo structures in the area. While it’s pricier than other spots in Kuta, the experience is well worth it. Run by a Japanese owner, Milky Way offers authentic, delicious sushi. Don’t miss their special sushi nights every Thursday starting at 6 PM.
If you’re on the hunt for the best coffee in town, look no further—this place has you covered! But it’s not just about the coffee; they also serve up a fantastic brunch. Expect to enjoy perfectly crafted Eggs Benedict, flavourful scrambled tofu, and vibrant smoothie bowls that taste as good as they look.
Lombok is a treasure trove of adventures waiting to be explored! The southern and northwestern regions are home to pristine, idyllic beaches, while the north offers a captivating mix of stunning waterfalls, scenic treks, lush rice fields, charming villages, and the iconic Mount Rinjani. Don’t miss out on the secret Gili islands either—they’re pristine gems featuring some of the most beautiful coral formations you can imagine.
Tanjung Ann was the first beach we explored in Lombok, and its beauty wowed us from the start. Just a 15-minute drive from Kuta, this wide, stunning beach is bordered by rolling green hills. Along the shore, you’ll find a selection of warungs with sun-beds, perfect for enjoying a refreshing drink and a tasty bite while taking in the breathtaking views.
You might recognise the name from Tampah Hills, but Tampah Beach is a paradise all its own! With a couple of charming warungs, comfortable sun-beds, and stunning blue waters, it’s a perfect spot for relaxation. The beach stretches on for miles and is complemented by nearby Lancing 1 and Lancing 2, both of which are equally idyllic.
This hidden gem quickly became one of my favorite beaches. I was truly amazed by its beauty! With its pristine soft sand and turquoise waters that transport you to the Caribbean, it feels like paradise. Even better, you’ll often have the entire beach to yourself. There are no warungs here, so be sure to bring your own water.
For those seeking bigger waves, local warungs also offer boat trips to more challenging surf spots further out from the beach.
Serangan Beach, located in southern Lombok, is a stunning spot, and Segara Hotel, positioned right on the beachfront, offers the perfect retreat. Whether you’re looking to relax by the sea, take a refreshing swim, or enjoy a delicious meal. They warmly welcome non-hotel guests, so you can spend a leisurely day enjoying their facilities and savouring a delightful lunch with gorgeous ocean views.
In Lombok, Rembitan and Sade are the two main Sasak villages where you can experience traditional indigenous culture. Sade Village is especially popular, offering a fascinating glimpse into Sasak life with its traditional homes and customs. Although it may feel a bit touristy, visiting Sade is a great way to learn about local traditions. The village is renowned for its handwoven textiles, traditional huts, and lively textile markets. We were certainly tempted by the beautiful, handcrafted fabrics available for purchase.
Gili Kedis, Gili Nanggu, and Gili Sudak are three hidden gems in southwest Lombok that are definitely worth exploring. You can arrange a visit to these islands through any travel agency in Kuta, which typically includes pick-up, drop-off, and a private boat equipped with snorkelling gear.
Another highlight is Gili Asahan, located on Lombok’s southern coast. We stayed here for a night and were blown away by its beauty. The island offers some of the best coral reefs in Lombok, fantastic snorkelling opportunities, and the chance to hop over to nearby islands, Gili Layar, Gili Rengit, and Gili Gede! You can organise a private boat tour through your hotel or negotiate directly with local boat operators.
To get to Gili Asahan, you can either arrange a private driver to take you to Kores Harbour, where boats to the island depart. Check with your hotel as they might even provide boat transportation as a complimentary service.
For a comfortable stay, I highly recommend the Blue Mathis. It’s a wonderful base for exploring the island and soaking in the serene beauty.
I initially thought this would be my least favorite trip, but it turned out to be an absolute highlight! Our adventure began with a scenic two-hour drive from Selong Balanak to the port, where we boarded a private boat for an unforgettable journey across the open sea.
Our first stop was a floating lobster farm, where you can purchase lobster by the kilo and have it cooked for you on the beach later—an amazing and unique experience! From there, we sailed to Pink Beach, which was simply stunning. The sand’s soft pink hue contrasted beautifully with the clear turquoise waters and the distant silhouette of Mount Rinjani.
The private tour also included stops at Pink Beach 2, Gili Petelu, and Gili Gambir for fantastic snorkelling, as well as Tangsi Beach, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Depending on the tides, our excursion either started or ended at Gili Pasir, a sandbar that appears to float in the middle of the sea.
The total cost for two was 1,300 IDR, which included hotel pick-up, the boat ride, and drop-off. We arranged the tour through Zila Lombok and can’t recommend their services highly enough for a day full of adventure and relaxation!
When visiting Central Lombok, you absolutely can’t miss the stunning Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls, which are nestled in the heart of the region. We decided to ride scooters from Selong Balanak, a scenic journey that took about 1.5 hours. If scooters aren’t your thing, you can also arrange for a driver to take you to these breathtaking falls. Either way, the journey is well worth it for the incredible natural beauty that awaits! Zila Lombok was fantastic and became our go-to for arrangements.
Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls are truly breathtaking natural wonders! Benang Stokel, the first waterfall, has two beautiful cascades that flow into shallow rock pools, creating a peaceful spot. My personal favorite was Benang Kelambu, which is just a 10-minute walk further along a scenic jungle trail with vendors selling water and snacks.
Benang Kelambu is special for its curtain-like falls. The water flows through the plants on the cliff, creating a stunning effect. The name “Kelambu,” meaning curtains, fits perfectly. There’s also a lovely rock pool where you can enjoy a refreshing swim.
Besides these main waterfalls, you can explore several others along a 30-minute trail through the valley, adding even more charm to the area.
The entrance fee is 50,000 IDR (prices may vary by season). Local guides are available at the entrance, but hiring one is optional.
Spending a couple of days in Tetebatu, I wished we stayed longer!
Often compared to the bustling “Ubud of Lombok,” Tetebatu offers a serene escape. Unlike Ubud, it’s not crowded with cafes, luxurious villas, or hordes of tourists. Instead, it’s a tranquil village that feels like a journey back in time, where you can glimpse a simple, self-sufficient lifestyle.
Nestled at the foot of Mount Rinjani, which overlooks the village, Tetebatu is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty! It’s a great place to stay after visiting Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls, just an hour’s drive away.
We stayed at Les Rizieres, and it was perfect! The owners were lovely and gave great tips about Tetebatu and the surrounding area.
Our goal was to see the rare black langurs, which are often hidden high up in the treetops. Just as we were about to leave, we finally caught a glimpse of them before the rain started.
To increase your chances of spotting these shy monkeys, it’s helpful to ask the locals for directions. They can guide you to areas where sightings are more common. Additionally, hiring a guide is a good option, as they are familiar with the forest’s layout and can help you find the best spots. The forest is large, and it’s easy to get lost!
This was one of my favourite experiences in Tetebatu! Recommended by the friendly owner of our guesthouse, this stunning loop walk takes about an hour and is absolutely worth it.
The walk begins at a breathtaking sunrise viewpoint overlooking lush rice fields with Mount Rinjani in the background. From there, you’ll stroll through vibrant rice terraces, meeting friendly locals along the way. The journey ends at a hidden waterfall, adding a touch of magic to the experience. It’s an unforgettable adventure that I’ll always cherish! (I have attached the map here)
If you’re heading to the North, Senaru is an excellent base for your adventure. Situated at the foot of Mount Rinjani, this picturesque village offers a range of activities and attractions for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts. Here, you’ll find accommodations to suit every taste, from cosy guesthouses to eco-lodges, all conveniently located near hiking trails, waterfalls, and the majestic Rinjani itself.
Senaru is typically where your Rinjani trek will begin, but it’s worth adding an extra day to unwind and explore. The nearby Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls are truly stunning and provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation before or after your hike.
Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls are widely regarded as the most stunning waterfalls in Lombok, tucked away in the scenic North. To reach these natural wonders, we stayed in Senggigi and arranged for a driver, which took about 2 hours. Alternatively, you can stay in Senaru village, which is closer to the waterfalls and offers guesthouses and villas, making it a convenient choice for a night before your trek.
I highly recommend starting your visit early; we arrived at 7:30 am and enjoyed the magnificent waterfalls almost entirely to ourselves until around 11:30 am, when more visitors began to arrive.
The adventure begins at Sendang Gile Waterfall, which is just a short 10-minute walk from the entrance. The descent offers stunning views as you navigate the steps. The journey then continues to Tiu Kelep Waterfall, which requires a bit more effort. The hike involves following the river for about twenty minutes, crossing streams multiple times. Although the trail can be tackled without a guide, hiring one at the entrance is advisable if you’re unsure about trekking or navigating the path.
At Tiu Kelep, you’ll arrive at a breathtaking basin surrounded by mist, showcasing the waterfall’s powerful beauty. Be prepared to get wet, so avoid bringing items that might get damaged by water, or carry a waterproof bag. This magical experience left a lasting impression and was one of the highlights of our Lombok adventure.
Entrance Fee: 10,000 IDR per person (covers access to both waterfalls)
Operating Hours: Open daily from 7 am to 5 pm.
Pergasingan Hill in northern Lombok is a stunning hiking destination with panoramic views that make the steep one-hour trail to the summit worth the effort. Suitable for most hikers, it starts near the village of Sembalun, close to Mount Rinjani. The trail is steep but accessible, with incredible views along the way. For an unforgettable experience, hike at sunrise or sunset when the landscape glows in soft, golden light. Camping at the summit with a local guide is also an option, offering a peaceful night under a starry sky and a breathtaking sunrise. Bring sturdy hiking boots, water, snacks, warm clothing, camping gear if staying overnight, and a camera. Hiring a local guide is recommended for safety and enriching your experience with local insights.
Bukit Selong, located about an hour’s drive from Senaru, is a lesser-known treasure worth visiting if you have some spare time. Though somewhat secluded and lacking other nearby tourist attractions, the Bukit Selong Rice Fields viewpoint offers extraordinary views that will add a unique touch to your Lombok itinerary. The trek to the viewing platform is easy, requiring just a short 10-minute walk from the car park. From the viewpoint, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of the valley, featuring a patchwork of colourful farm plots and rice fields.
Tackling the adventure of trekking Mount Rinjani is a must for those seeking a challenge! Guided by experienced guides and porters, this journey promises an unforgettable experience despite its challenges.
The ideal time to conquer Mount Rinjani is from April to January, as the rainy season begins after January and can make trekking difficult.
There are three different trekking packages available, with prices varying based on the size of your group. Each package includes trekking poles, jackets, hiking shoes, and camping gear.
For the two days, one night trek to the summit, the cost is 3,100,000 IDR per person for groups of 2-4 people, 2,800,000 IDR per person for groups of 5-8 people, and 2,500,000 IDR per person for groups of 8 or more.
For the three days, two nights trek to the summit and lake, the cost is 3,600,000 IDR per person for groups of 2-4 people, 3,300,000 IDR per person for groups of 5-8 people, and 3,000,000 IDR per person for groups of 8 or more.
For the four days, three nights trek to the summit, lake, and hot springs, the cost is 4,700,000 IDR per person for groups of 2-4 people, 4,350,000 IDR per person for groups of 5-8 people, and 4,000,000 IDR per person for groups of 8 or more.

Embarking on this expedition guarantees breathtaking rewards and memories that will last a lifetime.
Set off on an unforgettable journey in Northern Lombok with an exciting island-hopping boat tour to stunning destinations like Gili Kapal, Gili Kondo, and Gili Petagan. This adventure offers pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with colourful fish.
Given the distance from the south, prepare for a full-day trip and a lengthy journey to reach the departure point. We paid 1,200,000 IDR for two people, which covered both the taxi fare and the boat ride.
Our tour was booked through Ronny, whose services were outstanding. He organises a variety of tours around Lombok and is a very reliable driver. For a seamless and enjoyable experience, contact Ronny at +62 813 3762 8546. He can arrange everything for your island-hopping adventure, ensuring you have an amazing time exploring the natural wonders of Northern Lombok.
Senggigi, once a top tourist destination, has seen a shift in popularity with many now choosing to stay in Kuta. Despite this change, Senggigi still offers a tranquil escape with its unspoiled beaches, palm trees, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The area boasts a range of resorts and villas. We stayed at Living Asia Resort and Spa, which was the perfect retreat. Senggigi is an ideal spot for a relaxing night or two before you set off to explore the three Gili Islands, which are very close by: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno.
One of the top activities in Senggigi is to rent a scooter and explore the stunning coastline. Cruising along the scenic roads, you’ll have the freedom to hop from one beautiful beach to another, uncovering hidden gems and discovering charming local spots. This leisurely ride is not only the perfect way to find the best restaurants but also an excellent opportunity to interact with the friendly locals and soak in the authentic vibe of the area.
Traveling from Senggigi to Pemenang is an ideal route for those who enjoy a scenic journey. The drive along the coast treats you to breathtaking ocean views and picturesque landscapes.
Despite their popularity with tourists, the Gili Islands maintain their tropical paradise feel. With no cars or scooters allowed, getting around is easy and enjoyable—explore on foot, hop on a horse-drawn cart, or rent a bicycle for the day.
Gili Trawangan, or “Gili T,” is the largest and most bustling of the three, renowned for its lively bars and restaurants, making it a favourite among backpackers and nightlife enthusiasts. Gili Air offers a more relaxed atmosphere, ideal for those seeking peace and relaxation. Meanwhile, Gili Meno, the smallest and least developed, provides a tranquil escape away from the crowds. All three islands are excellent spots for swimming with sea turtles.
To reach the Gili Islands from Senggigi, you can take a short drive to the nearest port in Bangsal. From there, catch a public boat or speedboat directly to your chosen island. The journey by boat typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the island you’re visiting and the type of boat you choose.
