Nusa Penida is an exotic paradise situated southeast of Bali, Indonesia. It is the largest of the three Nusa islands, surpassing both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan in size. Once overlooked by travellers, Nusa Penida has now gained worldwide recognition. The island boasts a rugged, wild, and unspoiled landscape, making it an ideal destination for thrill-seekers looking to escape the beaten path and embark on exciting adventures.
From Bali, the only way to reach Nusa Penida is by speedboat or ferry, with the speedboat journey taking about 45 minutes or so.
As someone who’s been to Nusa Penida before, I highly recommend taking the speed boat from Sanur in East Bali. (Location in this map)
You can book your speedboat tickets in advance online or you can choose to purchase them in person upon arrival if you prefer. Booking in advance is advisable as the boats are becoming increasingly popular!
I personally recommend using Klook for booking speedboat tickets. They offer numerous departure and return time slots every day of the week. You can easily make a booking with them through their website.
You can also organise a day trip to Nusa Penida, although I don’t advise it as there is so much to do and see on the island. However, if you’re short on time and seeking a hassle-free way to explore Nusa Penida, consider joining a customised tour. This option allows you to select the attractions you want to see, tailoring your day trip to your preferences.
One tour company that I suggest is Four Elements, which offers pickup service from your hotel in Bali in the morning, followed by a boat ride to Nusa Penida. Upon arrival on the island, you’ll have the flexibility to explore the attractions of your choice.
If you’re planning to explore Nusa Penida on your own, having a scooter can give you the freedom to move around at your own pace. However, please note that while the main roads on the island have been upgraded since 2020, some roads are still in poor condition and can be challenging to navigate. Therefore, it’s recommended that only experienced drivers attempt to travel these roads on a scooter.
Should you choose to rent a scooter, there are plenty of vendors available at ToyaPakeh Harbour where you can negotiate a price. The typical cost for renting a scooter, is around 70,000 IDR, but prices are often negotiable.
However, if you’re not confident in driving a scooter, I highly recommend hiring a personal driver. This option not only relieves you of the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads but also ensures your safety on the island. The cost for a personal driver for the whole day is approximately 900,000 IDR and can be arranged through your hotel or you can book it here.
For short taxi trips, such as hotel transfers to and from the dock, you can usually arrange them on the spot or through your hotel, although they may not be very cost-effective.
However, it’s worth noting that the Grab and Go-Jek ride-hailing apps are not yet available in Nusa Penida, as they are only operational in Bali. Hopefully this will change in the future!
The best time to visit Nusa Penida is generally during the dry season, which typically extends from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days with minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as snorkelling, diving, and hiking.
However, it’s worth noting that Nusa Penida experiences a tropical climate, so temperatures remain warm throughout the year. If you prefer to avoid crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April and October when the weather is still favorable, but tourist numbers are lower.
When planning your stay on Nusa Penida, keep in mind that most accommodations are concentrated in the island’s western and northern regions.
For a convenient stay, many travellers love settling in the northern part of the island, especially near the lively port area. Here, you’ll find easy access to transportation for island hopping and delicious dining spots right by the beach. Plus, there’s a variety of accommodation options available to fit different budgets and preferences.
The hotel is conveniently located just a short 5-minute walk from Kelingking Beach. Each of the wooden bungalows features private terraces overlooking the pool and garden. Plus, breakfast is included in the price!
We had an amazing stay here! Conveniently situated in central Nusa Penida, the rooms were delightful. However, what truly made this place exceptional was the stunning view of the lush jungle and Mount Batur from our private balcony. Additionally, the large pool and delicious breakfast added to the experience.
If you want a place with views, this should be the place. On the cliff’s edge, the villa is perched hundreds of meters above the crystal blue waters. The views are incredible! It’s a little on the pricier side, but great for a night or two. Book in advance as they get booked up!
The Raja Lima & Spa is an exclusive bohemian hotel perched atop a cliff, near Diamond Beach. With 8 charming wooden bungalows, breathtaking interiors, a spa, a pool, and lush gardens, it offers mesmerising views of its surroundings.
The Chill Penida is a great place to lounge after a full day of exploration. They have a pool with great views of the ocean, so you can have a swim, enjoy a cocktail, and have a bite to eat. Additionally, they offer great dietary options for those who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or dairy-free.
Another great spot to lounge after a full day of exploring the island is a beachfront bar and restaurant that serves great breakfasts, good drinks, and offers lovely sea views.
Pina Colada Beach Bar is the ultimate eco-friendly beachfront bar and restaurant in Nusa Penida. This casual hangout on the beach serves up scrumptious food and cocktails. During the day, they have sun-beds and floor cushions, making it an ideal spot to swim, eat, and relax.
If you’re looking for a cosy cafe by the beach, Secret Penida is the place to go. They offer a variety of great breakfast options and hearty lunches, including smoothie bowls, vegan dishes, and healthy, locally sourced organic food. This is one of my favourite restaurants on the island!
If you’re seeking an adventure to one of the most picturesque beaches in Bali, look no further than Diamond Beach on the eastern tip of Nusa Penida.
To access this gem, you’ll need to navigate a rocky stairway on the cliff’s edge, which offers stunning panoramic views throughout the descent. Although the journey takes approximately fifteen minutes, the views are well worth the trek. At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll be greeted by a long stretch of pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and palm trees nestled between the sea and the towering limestone cliffs.
Be aware that the road to Diamond Beach is rough and challenging, particularly if you’re traveling by scooter. If you’re not an experienced driver, I recommend organising a private driver for the day.
It’s also essential to visit Diamond Beach during low tide, as the currents and waves are strong and not safe for swimming. Instead, take a light dip and relax while taking in the breathtaking views.
If you’re up for a refreshing swim after exploring the breathtaking Diamond Beach, make sure to head to the nearby Atuh Beach. This secluded cove is known for its calm and clear waters, making it an ideal spot for swimming.
There is an entrance fee of 35,000 IDR (including parking) per person.
Mata Air Peguyangan, also known as Peguyangan Waterfall, is a hidden gem tucked away in Nusa Penida. This place exudes enchantment and wonder, with its iconic blue staircase that hangs over the cliff’s edge, offering breathtaking views of the Penida coastline.
Despite the challenge of climbing over 700 steps, the magnificent views along the way make it all worthwhile. You can take a moment to catch your breath, relax, and soak in the picturesque scenery surrounding you.
Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find yourself in a sacred space, where there’s a natural spring and temple that holds significant cultural and religious importance to the locals. One of the most breathtaking features of Peguyangan is the natural rock pool located on the cliff’s edge. Make sure to bring your swimsuit and enjoy this unique experience before you start the journey back up!
This area is considered to be sacred so bring a serong. If you do not have one you can rent one there for 20,000 IDR.
Atuh Beach, located in a secluded cove on the eastern coast of Nusa Penida, offers a serene and beautiful escape. Combining a visit to Atuh Beach with Diamond Beach is highly recommended!
The hike down to the shoreline takes about 10 minutes and involves steep steps, but the stunning views of Atuh Beach below make it all worth it. The beach is nestled in a pretty cove, with crystal clear waters and golden sands fringed with coconut trees and reefs. Unlike other beaches on the island, Atuh Beach is dotted with food huts serving coconut water, nasi goreng, and snacks. You can also lounge on beanbags, sun loungers, and under shady umbrellas to relax and enjoy the view.
Atuh Beach faces east and is sunniest in the morning and early afternoon. High tide is the best time to visit, allowing for leisurely swimming in the cove. The location also offers breathtaking sunrises, making the early wake-up worth it.
Don’t forget to visit the famous Rumah Pohon Treehouse and Thousand Island Viewpoint, both located on the eastern coast of the island and definitely worth checking out.
While the area has become more developed with busy restaurants and hotels, Kelingking Beach is still a beautiful and unique location that should not be missed.
For a less crowded alternative, Paluang Cliff is just a short five-minute drive from the Kelingking viewpoint and offers stunning views of the T-rex cliff and hidden cove below.
The trek down to the secluded beach is not for the faint-hearted and requires a certain level of physical fitness and bravery. The trail is steep, with uneven rock steps and a daunting drop below. However, for those up for the challenge, a rickety bamboo rail and ropes have been placed along the way to assist in the descent. The hike takes around an hour, but once you reach the bottom, you will be rewarded with a secluded cove that is simply heavenly. The uncrowded beach is completely enclosed by high cliffs, making it a true paradise.
Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove, and the reason it is called Broken Beach, is the archway that wraps around the bay, allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. It’s a very easy spot to visit and is right next to another famous attraction, Angel’s Billabong. Broken Beach is known as Pasih Uug in the local language.
As you make your way to the beach, please note that the last 100 meters of the paved road are uneven and covered in loose gravel, so be cautious.
To fully experience the magic of Broken Beach, I highly recommend visiting at sunrise. Alternatively, you can also opt for a visit at sunset to witness the spectacular views.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted with the star attraction of the area—a natural rock arch surrounded by breathtaking ocean views. Take a leisurely walk around the cliff’s edge and discover several different viewpoints, all offering incredible scenery. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for manta rays swimming in the nearby Manta Bay.
Although swimming is not possible at Broken Beach, the location is stunning. If you’re looking for a refreshing dip, head over to Angel’s Billabong, which is just 500 meters away. Follow the signs, and you’ll find a remarkable natural rock pool on the edge of the ocean. For the best experience, be sure to time your visit with the tides as with all tidal pools.
Crystal Bay is easily accessible by scooter, and a brand-new road has been built, eliminating any strenuous hike to reach the beach. This makes it the perfect place for relaxation. The calm waters and white sand make it one of the best beaches for swimming on Nusa Penida.
Additionally, Crystal Bay is one of the best snorkelling sites in Penida. I was amased by the diversity of marine life I saw here. Snorkelling gear can be rented for as little as 50,000 IDR from one of the beach vendors, who will supply everything you need.
Crystal Bay is also one of the most popular diving spots on the island. Why? Because there is a good chance to see the famous Mola Mola.
I wasn’t lucky enough to see the Mola Mola but i did see turtles regularly!
The sunsets here are also striking and definitely worth sticking around for. It’s a great place to stop for some downtime, have a drink at one of the warungs, and finish the day after touring Penida.
Gamat Bay is one of Nusa Penida’s hidden gems. Wilder and more rugged than nearby Crystal Bay, this black sand beach is definitely worth a visit. If you’re looking for an accessible snorkelling spot without joining one of the boat tours, then Gamat Bay has got you covered. Since it’s a bit harder to reach Gamat Bay, chances are that you might have this beautiful place all to yourself.
Reaching Gamat Bay by boat is straightforward. Just take a stroll along the beach at Toyapakeh Harbour, and you’ll likely be approached by several locals who are more than happy to take you on a snorkelling trip. These tours typically stop at multiple snorkelling spots like Crystal Bay, Manta Point, and Gamat Bay.
You can also access the beach by land, which will take you 20 minutes from Toyapakeh Harbour.
Suwehan Beach is a hidden gem located on the southeastern coast of Nusa Penida that’s worth visiting. While it might be easy to confuse Suwehan Beach with the popular Diamond Beach, it has a charm of its own that sets it apart.
What makes Suwehan Beach truly special is its secluded and unspoiled nature, providing a perfect escape from the crowds. With fewer visitors and relatively untouched surroundings.
To reach Suwehan Beach, you’ll need to drive for about an hour from the main docks in Northern Penida. From there, it’s a 20-minute hike to the beach that’s quite straightforward. The journey is worth it, as Suwehan Beach offers breathtaking views and a unique experience that’s not to be missed.
To make the most of your visit, plan to arrive at Suwehan Beach during low tide, preferably before noon. This way, you can experience the beauty of the beach at its best and explore the picturesque landscape with ease. Otherwise, if you go late, you might find yourself gazing out at the ocean with no beach in sight when you reach the bottom.
Here, you can have an unforgettable experience swimming with graceful manta rays all year round. Boat tours depart daily from Toyapakeh Harbour to Manta Point. The cost for this adventure is 200,000 IDR per person. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures of the sea!
As this is becoming increasingly popular among tourists, I would recommend organising a private boat trip and leaving early. It’s pricier but worth the extra cost, as you will have these majestic creatures all to yourself. If you do wish to do with a tour, Snorkelling with manta rays from Nusa Penida are a great option.
To get to Banah Cliff, you can drive from the main town of Toya Pakeh, which is approximately a 45-minute journey. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views that stretch for miles.
The best time to visit Banah Cliff is at sunset, as you’ll get to witness the beauty of the landscape in different shades of light.
Situated on the west coast of Nusa Penida, Toyapakeh is not only a busy harbor for boats and tours but also a top spot for divers seeking an underwater paradise.
Toyapakeh Wall is famous for its beautiful coral formations and diverse marine life. Drift diving fans will love gliding over this underwater wonderland, where you can see a variety of tropical fish, sea turtles, and even manta rays.
If you’re planning a diving trip, I highly recommend Ok Divers for a professional and unforgettable experience.
